About Re-flective

Growing up with a lot comes with its own responsibilities. It is easy to look at those less fortunate when you grow up in a position of privilege and disassociate with them. It is simple to dismiss them and to stop caring about them. It happens all too often in modern society, where the rat race of the day results in missing much of the world around us. We can find ourselves lost in our own selfishness, becoming absorbed in our own lives and forgetting that those around us are less fortunate. We look to our individual successes and not to the successes we bring about as people.

Re-flective works by using its position to benefit those who are less fortunate, to bring about change in those with little by looking at how we have benefitted from much. The theology of altruism and community are the lifeblood of our mission, working together to help those who are looked down upon, and it with this culture that we live in our personal lives and bring into our professional lives. People are unique and have different attributes to bring to the table. It is not alone that we can succeed, but together.

We know it is important that society is self-sustainable, and the idea of empowerment and working with individuals is essential to our success. Those who have little are more willing to work to achieve much when given the right tools, and it is through education and empowerment and personal fulfilment that we have seen much of our success. We measure success not through financial reward and owning goods and property. To us, success is improving our collective position and bringing people together, whilst still honouring and respecting the beliefs and practices of the local community.

It is from this tradition of working across boundaries that Re-flective was born. We want our users to be able to bring their own skills and beliefs to the table and be able to reflect on the issues at hand, using their unique talents to rectify the problems together. We do not seek to control the direction of the solution and try to force a square peg into a round hole. We work with everyone involved and bring out the best solution for you as our service user.

Looking Back: The History of Re-flective

Re-flective started as the brainchild of Hermine Mofor, a trained mediator and experiences community worker. Re-flective is an organsation which aims to empower and embolden people and communities through a variety of mechanisms. We work using mediation, using community empowerment workshops and using self-esteem workshops to build a better community, better people and a better you.

Re-flective came about due to a change in society and a need that came about due to changes in service delivery. The basis of Re-flective was formed in 2012 in line with her work with the Women’s Institute and the OneVoice Women’s Group. She saw potential in creating a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) unit of the group, bringing more women from BAME communities – often the most disadvantaged and maligned of groups – into the Institute to enrich the body and force that the Women’s Institute had become since its founding. The work Hermine had put into this formed the OneVoice Women’s Group, and would also go into developing Re-flective as an entity in 2016.

Whilst much of the work for Re-flective’s development came from work within BAME communities and working with women, Re-flective was always anything but a BAME women’s organisation. The core ethos of Re-flective has proven to work across all sectors of society, whether ethnic, gender, sexuality, age, religion, or class, and the work we do benefits all, even if the focus benefits one group more directly. Some of our work focuses on women and female empowerment, but we have found that the way we work and empower women brings about significant improvements in the lives of those close to her. In some families, the woman is the lynchpin of the household, and by empowering her, the whole family is empowered and strengthened.

Many organisations that work with single communities recognise the “knock-on” effect that their work does. Re-flective addresses that effect directly and brings it to the core of its business practice. By empowering one, we empower all. By strengthening one, we strengthen all.
